Farrell’s Portal Notes: As Spring Ball Dies Down, Portal Heats Up

Published

on

The transfer portal is starting to heat up a bit as spring football ends and there are a few players who have been taking their time to make their decisions. Here’s an update on a few names to watch.

— DE Ochaun Mathis was back in Austin this weekend for another visit and this could seal the deal for the former TCU standout. His former coach Gary Patterson is with the Longhorns now and it’s close to home. USC, Ole Miss, Penn State and Nebraska — where he just visited — are also in play but it would be a surprise if he didn’t finish his career with Steve Sarkisian.

— UCLA LB transfer Caleb Johnson visited Miami this weekend and loved it. He has a trip scheduled to Texas for Monday and a decision between the two should occur sometime after that. Miami has a large lead from what I am told.

— DE Darrell Jackson who is transferring from Maryland has visited Florida State and Florida so far and will visit Tennessee, where he was once committed, at the end of the month. FSU was the team to beat and still could be but many felt it would be locked up by now so the Vols might have an NIL pitch that wins the day. He has ties to the Seminoles with his old coach Corey Fuller there.

— I get asked about former Louisville WR Tyler Harrell all the time and I still have the same answer — I think he goes to Alabama. Nick Saban gets what he wants and he wants the speedster in Tuscaloosa. Louisville is throwing everything they can at him to have him withdraw his name from the portal and Miami and many others are interested but I’d be shocked if he didn’t choose Alabama. He is supposed to visit Alabama next weekend and Bryce Young himself is working on him.

— OT Amarius Mims from Georgia visited Florida State and it was reported that he was committing. However, on Monday, it was reported that he is returning to Georgia.
