Farrell: Ranking the Top Five Portal Recruiting Teams

Published

on

USC

Outgoing: 22 (notables: Jaxson Dart, Bru McCoy, Kedon Slovis, Michael Trigg)

Incoming: Since his arrival on campus, coach Lincoln Riley has maintained an extremely aggressive approach in the portal. And this approach has produced multiple big-time additions. All conversations about USC incoming transfers must start with Caleb Williams. The arrival of the Heisman Trophy caliber quarterback immediately made the Trojans notable again nationally. Then adding his Oklahoma teammate wide receiver Mario Williams, plus the running back duo of Travis Dye and Austin Jones, should give a huge boost to the offense. Defensively, linebackers Eric Gentry, Romello Height and Shane Lee totally revamp the unit, while defensive linemen Solomon Byrd and Earl Barquet should plug in extremely well this season.

Ole Miss

Outgoing: 20 (notables: Henry Parrish, Mohamed Sanogo, Keidron Smith, John Rhys Plumlee)

Incoming: Coach Lane Kiffin seems to be having fun in the portal, and with that has come a great deal of success. While pulling in the USC duo of quarterback Jaxson Dart and tight end Michael Trigg received the most publicity, there are numerous other additions that should make huge contributions in 2022 and beyond. On the offensive side of the ball, offensive lineman Mason Brooks and Jordan Rhodes and wide receivers Dayton Wade, Malik Heath and Jordan Watkins are ones to watch, as well as former five-star running back Zach Evans, who everyone will be keeping an eye on. Defensively, defensive backs Isheem Young and Ladarius Tennison, linebacker Troy Brown and defensive lineman Jared Ivey add talent and playmakers to each level of the unit.

Alabama

Outgoing: 18 (notables: Camar Wheaton, Drew Sanders, Agiye Hall, Jahleel Billingsly)

Incoming: The Tide haven’t been the busiest team in the portal, however, each of their additions should play a major role during the 2022 season. Georgia Tech running back Jahmyr Gibbs has impressed since arriving on campus, the wide receiver duo of Jermaine Burton and Tyler Harrell are both playmakers, offensive lineman Tyler Steen has plenty of SEC experience during his days at Vanderbilt and Elias Ricks has the potential to be one of the best defensive backs in the country.

LSU

Outgoing: 17 (notables: Elias Ricks, Trey Palmer, Max Johnson, Deion Smith)

Incoming: A majority of the notable incoming transfers are on the defensive side of the ball, however the success of the 2022 season in Baton Rouge will largely fall on the shoulders of quarterback Jayden Daniels. The running back due of Noah Cain and Tre Bradford should also make an immediate impact. Defensively, and especially the secondary, has received a complete overall with the notable additions of defensive backs Joe Foucha and Gregory Brooks from Arkansas, Mekhi Garner from Louisiana, Jarrick Bernard from Oklahoma State and Sevyn Banks from Ohio State.

South Carolina

Outgoing: 19 (notables: Kolbe Fields, Jordan Rhodes, Jazston Turnetine, Vincent Murphy)

Incoming: This group is obviously highlighted by quarterback Spencer Rattler, but the Gamecocks have added some other important pieces, especially on the offensive side of the ball. Having tight end Austin Stogner join Rattler from Oklahoma was a nice win, as well as adding wide receivers Corey Rucker and Antwane Wells. Neither of these two were household names in 2021 but may very well become that in 2022. Also look for a big season from Central Michigan transfer defensive back Devonni Reed, who should flourish in the SEC.
