Nebraska Pieces Together Three Transfers to Compete with Big Ten Rivals

For a team that’s struggled in the Big Ten since Fred Hoiberg’s hiring, Nebraska we’re able to reload this offseason by bringing in some exciting transfer pieces that could finally see the head coach find his first winning season in Lincoln. While several major contributors from last year’s squad have departed, Hoiberg has done an excellent job of assembling three new additions combined with a solid roster base that if healthy should exceed expectations and finish out of the conference’s bottom two for the first time since 2018.

Nebraska Transfer Additions:

JUWAN GARY, ALABAMA

6.5 PPG / 3.4 RPG / .3 APG

SAM GRIESEL, NORTH DAKOTA STATE

14.3 PPG / 6.6 RPG / 3.4 APG

EMMANUEL BANDOUMEL, SMU

10.6 PPG / 3.8 RPG / 1.8 APG

With Hoiberg’s first addition, he would recruit Lincoln, Nebraska native Sam Griesel who arrives home as a two-time All-Summit League selection after four seasons with South Dakota State. While he’s primarily shown as a point guard with the Bison the past two seasons, the 6-foot-6 guard is also a more than capable shooter managing 38% from three-point range last year. Given his size and ability, Griesel is going to prove a mismatch for most Big Ten guards and could be the key to Nebraska’s success next season but more than anything he’s excited to represent his local program and that should inspire Cornhusker fans particularly after missing out on Baylor Scheierman

Juwan Gary would be Nebraska’s second piece from the offseason transfer portal after three seasons at Alabama helping the Crimson Tide to the 2021 SEC Regular-Season and Postseason titles for two NCAA Tournament appearances. Gary; a former top-100 prospect in 2019, arrives with three years of eligibility remaining and according to Hoiberg himself, will provide versatility and physicality all across the floor next season.

Following three seasons at SMU, Emmanuel Bandoumel was the last to commit to head coach Hoiberg finishing his junior season as a two-year starter for the Mustangs shooting about 36% from three across those combined 50 appearances. A 6-foot-4 guard, Bandoumel is an effective scorer with size and athleticism who will contribute on both the offensive and defensive side of the ball while overall adding an experienced guard to the depth chart.

TPR’s Projected Lineup for Nebraska:

Sam Griesel, G

Emmanuel Bandoumel, G

CJ Wilcher, G

Juwan Gary, G/F

Derrick Walker, F
