Cal Poly

Hamad Mousa: Against All Odds

There’s no comparison to the story of Cal Poly’s sophomore guard Hamad Mousa. The 6-foot-8 big guard beat the insurmountable odds stacked against him. Now, he gets to enjoy all of the success coming his way.

Don’t get it twisted though, Mousa worked hard to be in the position he’s in. His path is unique and that’s what makes it special.

Everything started in the capital city of Qatar, Doha. Basketball isn’t as popular in Qatar as compared to the United States but is slowly growing in viewership and fandom.

Fortunately for Mousa, the basketball bug ran in the family. His father, Yassin, is a Qatari basketball legend. He was the first Arab player to receive an invite to the Nike Hoop Summit in 2000 and also played on Qatar’s national team where he led his country to a 3×3 FIBA Championship in 2014.

Mousa got his opportunity thanks to his standout performances at Basketball Without Borders, the NBA’s and FIBA’s global basketball development and outreach program. From there, he didn’t look back as the NBA Global Academy in Australia came calling.

After relocating to Canberra, Mousa honed his skills and was even offered the opportunity to follow in his father’s footsteps by representing Qatar with two senior appearances during 2024 qualification for FIBA’s Asia Cup. All the while, he was preparing to do something even more special.

Mousa committed to the Dayton Flyers back in May of 2024 and in doing so, had become one of only two Qatari natives to play Division I basketball.

After an underwhelming freshman season averaging about 7 minutes a game and scoring 1.3 PPG, Mousa entered the transfer portal in hopes of finding his new home. Eventually, he did.

Mousa clearly isn’t afraid to travel far distances and of course, he traveled from east coast to west coast to officially commit to a rebuilt Cal Poly program. This decision couldn’t have worked out any better.

Since arriving, he’s been in the midst of an absolute breakout season. Mousa has played at least 24 minutes per game for the Mustangs and has scored double-digits in every single outing.

He’s putting the world and the Big West on notice. This is a Cal Poly team that just two short seasons ago was 0-20 in conference play and won a disappointing four games. Fast forward to the present, they have 5 wins and are competing night in and out under new head coach Mike DeGeorge.

From the NBA Global Academy to the transfer portal, Mousa didn’t waste any opportunity he received. Instead, he proved he belonged. Now established as one of the best Qatari hoopers ever, Mousa will look to build upon his monstrous start to the season.

He’s leading Cal Poly in scoring and rebounds per game with 20.5 and 5.9, respectively. He’s one of the smoothest scorers in the NCAA and is the most reliable player when he’s on the court. After scoring a college career high, 31 points versus UC Riverside, and 27 points against Cal State Fullerton, Mousa has a major test heading his way.

The Mustangs have to prepare for a huge showdown against UCLA on Dec. 19. This will be another opportunity for Mousa to put himself on the map and with the way this season has gone, he will be ready for the task at hand.

According to ESPN Analytics, the Bruins have a 98.9% chance of winning this matchup. UCLA being heavily favored won’t surprise most college basketball fans, but you can never count out the Mustangs led by Mousa. His whole life has been built off of destroying narratives and beating the odds. This upcoming Friday will be no different.

Through the transfer portal, Mousa was able to revive his career. The 360 from his freshman to sophomore year is a testament to never giving up.

The beauty of basketball is that if you have talent, the ball will find you in all of the right places. Mousa’s journey is so unique because of where he came from and what he had to go through.

It’s safe to say the ball found Hamad Mousa.
