Keionte Scott: Eye of the Storm

My mindset this year is it has to happen.”

This wasn’t just a motto, it was a mandate.

Keionte Scott, the sixth-year redshirt senior defensive back, didn’t mince his words at the beginning of the season.

He showcased his toughness and versatility throughout the year. From battling injuries to making plays all over the field, Scott helped lead the Hurricanes back to the College Football Playoff.

While it hasn’t always been pretty for Miami, it’s worth noting that pressure is a privilege. This is a slogan that Scott has embraced throughout his football journey.

Coming out of California was already going to be tough due the state’s massive talent pipeline. As a major football territory, it ranks right up there with Texas and Florida to name a few. The San Diego native shined as a two-way star and he helped put his high school, Helix High, on the map.

Despite the success Scott was unranked coming out of high school and he took the route less traveled by going JUCO. People often look down upon it, but many players genuinely need the extra development.

Scott’s story began after committing to Snow College, an NJCAA Division I program in Utah. Despite only spending two seasons there, he still managed to leave a lasting legacy.

He was a key player in leading Snow College to a national championship and earned NJCAA All-American first-team honors as a cornerback.

After grinding his way to the top, Scott was proclaimed the No. 1 JUCO cornerback in the nation. The transfer portal’s steady rise was huge in allowing him an opportunity to go from JUCO to Division I. And that’s exactly what Scott did.

It’s no small feat to jump division rankings, let alone from JUCO to the highest level of college athletics. Scott committed to Power 5 Auburn after two great years at Snow College.

At Auburn he would have to adjust to the new level of play. It wasn’t overnight success. The work was just beginning and Scott had to earn his spot.

He did that by becoming a standout special teamer. He made numerous plays on this often overlooked portion of football. After becoming a starting nickel back for the Tigers he never looked back.

Three years flew by and in his final year of eligibility, Scott transferred to Houston. But after just a couple of months he would once again enter the portal and this time ended up at The U.

Following your dreams and passions can take you far. Scott is living proof of that and this past season has statistically been his best.

With 54 total tackles, 5 sacks and even a 38-yard interception return for a touchdown, Scott has been the heart of this tough Canes defense. In the midst of his breakout year, a serious foot injury arose and Scott was ruled “unlikely to return this season,” according to his head coach, Mario Cristobal.

This is the type of heartbreak that can negatively alter a team but the Canes chose to rally. Miami won its next two games, and were chosen by the committee to participate in the CFP.

This was Miami’s first time making the CFP since the expanded format which wasn’t something Scott could miss after working his way to the top. After nearly a month away from the gridiron, one of the ACC’s top defenders made his return.

No. 10 Miami was slated to visit Kyle Field and face off against No. 7 Texas A&M. Marcel Reed and the Aggies were wrapping up an 11-1 campaign but little did they know a storm was coming.

In a rare college football defensive matchup it was the Canes who shined. Texas A&M averaged 33.8 points per game, but Miami stifled the Aggies, holding them to just three points. The Canes won 10-3 behind a dominant defensive performance.

There were many great players who made great plays but in his return to football action after over a month off, Scott might have shined the brightest. He finished his playoff debut with 10 tackles, 3 tackles-for-loss, 2 sacks and even forced a fumble. This was simply utter dominance for a guy who many thought would be shelved for the remainder of the season.

Now, Miami faces off against the defending champions, No. 2 Ohio State, in the Cotton Bowl.

The entire country knows what Ohio State brings to the table. Defensively they have one of the strongest units in the country. Offensively they have possibly the best receiving corps in all of college football.

Standout sophomore receiver Jeremiah Smith and projected 1st round pick Carnell Tate headline the receiving room. This game will be another heavyweight bout between stingy defenses and electric offenses.

What comes next won’t be easy, but Scott has already shown he can endure anything thrown his way.

He’s one of the most disruptive corners in the nation. His physicality sets him apart from his peers and he’s not backing down from anyone lined up across from him. Not even those talented Buckeyes.

Scott’s draft stock has also has risen throughout the season and he will surely hear his name called in April 2026.

His journey is so much bigger than him. The transfer portal opened the door to this grand stage, but he kicked it in with his work.

Every storm starts somewhere. For Scott, it started on JUCO fields, where belief is everything. He made his mindset clear: “It has to happen.” Now, standing in the eye of the storm, there’s no doubt that it did.
