From Oakland to Stillwater: Anthony Roy’s journey to Oklahoma State

Anthony Roy’s journey has been anything but traditional, with many stops along the way to Oklahoma State.

The Oakland, Calif. native made a name for himself at Dublin High School where he earned honors such as East Bay Athletic League MVP and First Team All-Bay Area. Though well-regarded locally, his college road didn’t lead him immediately to a high-major program.

Roy began his college career at San Francisco, where he saw limited action as a freshman. After that stop, he chose to retool his game at Wenatchee Valley, a non-NCAA affiliated program in Washington. He then returned to Division I with New Mexico State in a stint that allowed Roy to showcase his eccentric scoring ability.

Despite shooting nearly 40% from behind the arc with New Mexico State, his next stop was Langston University, an NAIA school in Oklahoma. Here, Roy led the program to a national runner-up finish.

He became a First Team All-American and Sooner Athletic Conference Player of the Year, averaging more than 18 points per game and demonstrating elite three-point shooting. It was the season that put him firmly back on the national radar.

Following his most successful year, he made the jump back up to Division-I, playing at Green Bay for the 2024-25 season where he quickly became one of the nation’s most prolific scorers. Roy lead NCAA Division 1 in scoring, averaging 25.7 points through the first 11 games before a foot injury ended his season prematurely.

After all that, the guard made his way back to the Sooner State, but chose to be a Cowboy.

“They were aggressive in the recruiting process and made it feel like I was really wanted,” Roy said. “I watched a dozen games this year and felt it would be a great fit.”

That’s what it’s been so far.

Roy is averaging 17.5 points, 4.3 rebounds and 1.3 assists per game. The guard recently helped the Cowboys picked up a ranked win at nationally ranked UCF, which he connected on four 3-pointers. It was another example of just how quickly he’s become a key piece in Oklahoma State’s rotation under head coach Steve Lutz.

“Fans can expect me to burn the nets down,” Roy said.

He’s lived up to the words that he claimed ahead of the season.

Roy’s basketball journey has taken him all across the country, but there couldn’t be a better fit for his final season.

From high school standout, through junior college and multiple Division I schools, to NAIA stardom, then leading the nation in scoring, and finally to Oklahoma State, it reflects both resilience and adaptability.

Each step gave him new experience, and now in Stillwater, he’s converted all of it into a chance to lead in one of college basketball’s toughest conferences.

Named to the Jerry West Award watch list as one of the nation’s top shooting guards in 2025-26, Roy is now poised to showcase his scoring and leadership on an even bigger stage.
