Yes, even the blue bloods dip their toes into the transfer portal. Duke head coach Jon Scheyer and his coaching staff have recruited the No. 1 recruiting class in the country for 2022. Now, the Blue Devils are rounding out their roster with veterans from the transfer portal.
DUKE’s TRANSFER PORTAL ADDITIONS:
JACOB GRANDISON / ILLINOIS
9.8 PTS / 3.8 REB / 2.3 AST / 41% 3FG
RYAN YOUNG / NORTHWESTERN
9.0 PTS / 4.2 REB / 56% FG
KALE CATCHINGS / HARVARD
9.1 PTS / 4.0 REB / 1.0 STL / 50% FG
MAX JOHNS / PRINCETON
2.8 PTS / 1.3 REB / 65% FG
In late April, Northwestern transfer Ryan Young committed to Duke, giving Scheyer a big to be able to put the ball into the net. Young shot 56 percent from the field this past season for the Wildcats. Young will fit in well with Kyle Flipowski and Dereck Lively II, who both are true freshmen next season. The New Jersey native should be a great piece right off the bench.
Duke received two Ivy League commits from Kale Catchings and Max Johns, who both have one year of eligibility.
Scheyer and his coaching staff rounded out their roster by landing Illinois transfer Jacob Grandison, one of the best shooters in the country. Grandison played two years for the Fighting Illini, appearing in 60 games. Grandison averaged 9.8 points on 46 percent shooting from the field and 41 percent from three.
Duke has a very young team next season but adding these four transfers with returning guard Jeremy Roach should give the Blue Devils enough veteran leadership next season.
TPR’s PROJECTED LINEUP FOR DUKE:
JEREMY ROACH, G
JACOB GRANDISON, G
DARIQ WHITEHEAD, F
KYLE FLIPOWSKI, F
DERECK LIVELY II, C
