Examining Pitt’s Best Transfer Portal Pickups

Published

Pitt football defensive back Donovan McMillan is Pitt's highest rated transfer by TPR.

Earlier this week, I saw many Pitt fans discussing the Panthers’ transfer history over the past few years under Pat Narduzzi. Using TPR’s College Football Transfer Analysis tool “Spike,” I wanted to provide some more statistics to give fans a better idea of Pitt’s transfer success under Narduzzi.

There are more than 10 transfers on this year’s Panther roster, headlined by a defensive back and a wide receiver. While Narduzzi brought in two QBs this past transfer cycle, neither of those players have been able to solidify themselves as a consistent producer this season.

Let’s check out Pitt’s top transfer performers from this season (who have transferred into Pitt in the past three years). This list is based on TPR’s College Football Fantasy Point system, which is described here.

THE POSITION PLAYERS

1. DONOVAN MCMILLON – FLORIDA

McMillon transferred to the Panthers this past offseason, and has been a great pickup so far. He has accumulated 94.5 TPR Fantasy Points so far this year. McMillon has 65 tackles (29 solo), 0.5 TFLs, and one pass defended. McMillon is a top ten overall safety in the class of 2023, despite playing very limited snaps in the first few games of the season.

2. KONATA MUMPFIELD – AKRON

Mumpfield transferred to Pitt in 2022, and has been solid for the Panthers. This year, he has totaled 81.8 TPR Fantasy Points, grabbing 33 receptions for 399 yards and four touchdowns. Konata leads the team in all of those categories.

3. MJ DEVONSHIRE – KENTUCKY

Devonshire joined the Panthers in 2021 and has made some massive plays for Pitt since, notably the infamous “Pitt Six” against West Virginia last year. This season, Devonshire has totaled 78.6 TPR Fantasy Points, as he has racked up 24 tackles (13 solo), 0.5 TFL, eight passes defended, two interceptions, and one touchdown. His 8 passes defended leads all transfers from the past three seasons.

4. SHAYNE SIMON – NOTRE DAME

Simon joined Pitt in 2022. This season, he has 66.7 total TPR Fantasy Points: 28 tackles (14 solo), three QB hurries, three sacks, five tackles for loss, and one interception. His five TFLs are good enough to put him in the top 25 of all transfer LBs from the past three seasons in that category. Three QB Hurries are top 20 of all transfer LBs from the past three seasons in that category.

5. C’BO FLEMISTER – NOTRE DAME

Flemister joined the Panthers in 2022, and this year, he has totaled 60.4 TPR Fantasy Points. Flemister has rushed 76 times for 306 yards and two touchdowns, with a long run of 38 yards. He is averaging four yards per carry. He has also caught six passes for 88 yards and one touchdown through the air.

THE QB’s

Out of all of the quarterbacks that transferred in the past three years, this year, there are 60 quarterbacks in division one college football that are averaging more TPR fantasy points per game than Pitt’s Phil Jurkovec, who scored an average of 12.6 FPTs/Gm while playing. That list is headlined by LSU’s Jayden Daniels and USC’s Caleb Williams, and includes former Pitt QB Kedon Slovis, who is averaging 15.3 TPR FPts/Gm at BYU this year.

PHIL JURKOVEC – BOSTON COLLEGE, NOTRE DAME – 12.6 FPTS/GM

Jurkovec transferred in this past offseason and started five games for Pitt this year, going 1-4. He totaled 63.02 TPR Fantasy Points, completing 54% of his passes and throwing for 818 yards, six touchdowns, and three interceptions. Jurkovec also had 59 rushing yards and one rushing TD, as well as two fumbles.

CHRISTIAN VEILLEUX – PENN STATE – 8.9 FPTS/GM

Veilleux has accumulated 44.26 TPR Fantasy Points so far through five appearances (three starts). He has completed 50% of his pass attempts, throwing for 774 yards, five TDs, and six interceptions. He also has one fumble.
