4. Houston Cougars

The 2023 season saw some incredible moments for the Cougars, including a Haily Mary win over West Virginia and another walk off winner against Baylor later in the season. However, the sweet taste of these electric victories was soured by a porous defense. Houston gave up over 31 points per game, leading to a 4-8 record in their first season in the Big-12.

To combat this, new head coach Willie Fritz has hit the portal in search of defensive studs to bolster the group, starting with Louisiana linebacker Kendre’ Gant. A freak athlete at his position, Gant was a sparkplug for the Ragin’ Cajuns last seasons, finishing the year with 64 tackles, six sacks, and three pass defenses and forced fumbles.

Staying in Louisiana for his second defensive addition of the weekend, Fritz landed former UL Monroe LB Michael Batton. A Houston native preparing to make his homecoming in 2024, Batton has been a tackling machine for the Warhawks in his two seasons with the team. The junior linebacker followed a 45-tackle freshman season with 79 in 2023 and will be the backbone of a new and improved Cougars defense.
