First, Dykes needed to address the defensive side of the ball. A Horned Frogs defense that finished bottom five in scoring in a typically lackluster defensive conference needed a change. Starting with a hometown kid, Dykes brought in these players from the portal in hopes of strengthening up the defense.
Nana Osafo-Mensah, DL
A Fort Worth native, Osafo-Mensah played 12 games for Notre Dame the last two seasons, however, was rarely given significant starter snaps. Osafo-Mensah was a four-star recruit out of high school, praised for his athleticism and versatility. At 6-3 260 pounds, added strength and weight could be what Nana needs to be a beast at TCU. The senior recorded 47 tackles and five sacks in his time with the Irish.
Kaleb Elarms-Orr, LB
After redshirting his freshman season, Elarms-Orr was all over the field for Cal in 2023. Kaleb recorded 87 tackles in his first year as a starter, along with six passes defensed, a sack, a forced fumble, and an interception. After the departure of Dee Winters and many other defensive leaders following the CFP season, TCU missed that presence in 2023. Elarms-Orr will look to not only produce on the field but provide much needed leadership.
Jatravis Broughton, CB
Seeing snaps for a top tier Utah defense in all five of his years there, Broughton played lights out ball each season that he was in a starting role. Broughton is lock down at his corner position, while also being willing to step up and make a stop. The senior followed his best tackling season in 2022 (46) with 37 more in 2023.
