McNeese State Rebuilt for Dominance in the Southland Conference

Quadir Copeland – Syracuse

Between Parker, Murray, Selebangue and now Copeland, is it fair to say that the race for Conference Player of the Year is already shaping up to be an in-house battle between the McNeese State starting lineup?

Copeland arrives after two season’s with the Orange, averaging career-highs of 9.6 PPG, 4.6 RPG, 2.8 APG and 1.5 STLPG as a sophomore, the crafty 6-foot-6 guard is going to be a nightmare for Southland defenders. 

Evidently, he does a little bit of everything on the court outside of much consistency behind the three-point line while shooting 48% from the floor this past season. However, his insane playmaking skills, size and athleticism will make him a walking highlight reel in a conference like the Southland.

With multiple years of eligibility to give, improvement and continued development will be critical to Copeland’s game over the next couple season’s but this is a home run transfer acquisition for McNeese State. 

Jerome Brewer – Texas A&M-Commerce

After two seasons at TAMUC, Brewer brings this McNeese State program additional experience within the Southland having averaged 13.8 PPG last season, as well as a physical interior threat who can help take pressure off the playmaking guards/wings.

A 6-foot-9 forward, while Brewer might seem the most underwhelming of the six offseason additions, his unique mix of size and athleticism makes him a viable candidate for the Cowboys starting rotation.

Primarily known as a low post scorer, Brewer has more of an all around game than most expect as a consistent rebounder, a solid defender and a foul line threat despite being so massive. 

Where exactly he fits into this McNeese State front court next to a trio of more experienced pieces in Charles, Selebangue and Shumate I’m not sure. But only a rising junior, Brewer will offer a lot to the continued growth of this Cowboys program over the next few seasons.
