The transfer portal has become a crucial element of college athletics. It’s the tool athletes use to transfer from one school to another. There are a plethora of reasons why one would transfer; playing style, coaching conflicts or even NIL opportunities have quickly become some of the most relevant reasons to enter the portal. Although it’s open to student athletes in various sports, the timing of the transfer portal’s key dates vary due to different athletic seasons. Understanding the deadlines and windows available to make a move are key if somebody wants to maximize themselves and their opportunities.
Athletes and coaches worldwide are able to utilize the transfer portal, and have recently done so at an unprecedented rate. Let’s check out some of those key portal dates in 2026.
Football
The CFB season may be halfway through but that just means the opening of the transfer portal is fast approaching. Their transfer window will look a little bit different in comparison to years past. The NCAA has announced that FBS and FCS schools will have a singular new transfer portal window running from January 2 to January 16, 2026. If a team is fortunate enough to advance far in the playoffs the NCAA grants them a five day window starting the day after their final game. There is also an exception given to players on teams going through coaching changes. After a new coach is hired or announced, players are allotted a fifteen day period to enter their name in the portal. While this new simplistic format takes away the traditional spring transfer window, the NCAA hopes to manage its student athletes better.
Men’s Basketball
There has been no shortage of competitiveness in the college basketball scene and the product is amazing to witness. Seeing underrated teams compete has been rejuvenating and the development surrounding the portal has been a major factor. The MBB transfer portal will officially be open on March 23, 2026 and the window closes on April 21. Though the portal officially closes on April 21, it’s only a deadline for transfer entry and those who remain available are still eligible to be recruited. Every year there are hundreds of high profile names entering the portal and 2026 has a chance to be similar.
Women’s Basketball
Women’s basketball has soared in terms of popularity and viewership over the past few years and undoubtedly, the portal has played a significant role. Some of the premier women’s stars are beginning to take notice of the transfer portal and junior guard MiLaysia Fulwiley is one of the best examples. She recently made her move from South Carolina to the Bayou and joined the LSU Tigers after a run to the Elite Eight. At the conclusion of this 2025-26 season, we can only expect to see more talent following in her footsteps. The WBB transfer portal window officially opens on March 24, 2026 and closes a little under a month later on April 22.
Every student-athlete has their own journey. As we’ve learned with all this development around the transfer portal, there’s talent at all levels of college basketball from D1 to JUCO and NAIA. The transfer portal provides a way to help the most talented rise to the top and showcase their talent with some of the best programs in college basketball.
