Last offseason’s portal haul was undoubtedly a rousing success for Richmond head coach Chris Mooney. Marked by the additions of Co-Atlantic 10 Player of the Year Jordan King, former Wagner guard Delonnie Hunt and improvements up and down the roster, the Spiders managed a 23-10 record as the conference’s regular season champions.
While Richmond ultimately fell short at the 2024 A10 Championship in Brooklyn, Mooney took the opportunity to aggressively recruit the portal once again. Securing a host of talent to improve on this Spiders roster, Richmond looks set to compete near the top of the A10 once again.
Here’s a breakdown of the five transfer portal recruits Mooney and Co. have brung in this offseason and how each can impact the program looking ahead to the 2024/25 campaign.
Jonathan Beagle – Albany
After two dominant years at Albany, averaging 12.4 PPG, 8.3 RPG, 1.9 APG and being selected as the 2022/23 America East Rookie of the Year, the 6-foot-9 forward takes his talents to the A10.
With graduate senior and second-leading Neal Quinn out of eligibility, Beagle will be a strong candidate to be the Spiders primary interior piece alongside rising junior Mike Walz.
Shooting 59% from the floor and just 14% from three-point range on very limited attempts, it would be easy to label Beagle as a big man only known for his prowess in the paint. However, he’s quick and athletic despite his size and brings a ton of versatility on both the offensive and defensive ends.
Most importantly, Beagle is a top tier rebounder and thrives at turning second chance opportunities into additional points. He’ll prove a vital piece to the Richmond frontcourt heading forward with multiple years of eligibility to develop under Mooney and his staff.
