Mike Farrell Breaks Down New Virginia Tech Starting QB Grant Wells

Grant Wells was named the starting quarterback at Virginia Tech

Brent Pry has made one of his biggest decisions of his short tenure at Virginia Tech as he’s named Marshall transfer QB Grant Wells as his starter.

Wells beat out fellow transfer QB Jason Brown who joined the Hokies from South Carolina. Wells, a 6-2, 203-pounder from West Virginia, was a two-year starter for the Thundering Herd and threw for 3,532 yards last season (66.3 completion percentage) with 16 touchdowns. However, he also threw 13 picks. In 2020 he passed for 2,091 yards with 18 touchdowns and 9 interceptions.

What does Wells bring to the table? He has a big arm and his accuracy is excellent. The issue? He tends to use that big arm to force the ball too much and into tight spaces. Sources say he’s toned that down since he’s been at Tech and his spring game performance with 176 yards and two scores is more of what we are expected to see. He has a chance to put up big numbers at Tech as they have been reeling at the position since Hendon Hooker and Braxton Burmeister both struggled.

Notre Dame, Indiana, Arizona State and others contacted Wells out of the portal but his dad is a Hokie alum and the family grew up on Frank Beamer ball. Pry is trying to bring that back to Blacksburg and he might have found his quarterback.
